I don’t think the biggest problem is that we don’t hear God’s voice.
I think the biggest problem is that we spend months trying to talk ourselves out of what we heard the first time.
We call our friends.
We search the internet.
We ask strangers.
We pray for one more sign.
Sometimes we’re not looking for an answer.
We’re looking for permission to ignore the one we already have.
I know this because I’ve done it.
People often assume that because I’m a medium, I must always trust my own discernment.
The truth?
I ignored it.
Not because I wasn’t intuitive.
Not because I wasn’t intelligent.
Because I was trusting.
Because I was hopeful.
And hope can be a beautiful thing...
until it starts arguing with the truth.
The man I loved didn’t come into my life asking me to be part of an affair.
He told me he was getting divorced.
He asked me to wait for him.
He gave me a timeline.
For almost a year, everything appeared to line up with what he had promised.
He wasn’t wearing a wedding ring.
He spent his time with me and my daughters.
He helped us move.
We looked at homes together.
We talked about a future.
If someone had looked at our lives from the outside, they probably would have believed the same story I believed.
Until little things began to whisper.
Every time I asked a simple question, he became upset.
So eventually...
I stopped asking.
One day, a quiet thought crossed my mind.
Not a booming voice.
Not a dramatic sign.
Just one simple question.
Do you want Julie’s life?
(I've changed her name to protect her privacy.)
Julie was his wife.
The answer came immediately.
No.
I didn’t want a life where I had to wonder.
I didn’t want a life where I had to look over my shoulder.
I didn’t want a relationship that stole my peace.
I knew.
And then...
I talked myself out of it.
Looking back, I realize something else.
There was always another explanation.
Another excuse.
Another reason why my instincts must be wrong.
And somehow...
Every woman in his life was “crazy.”
His wife was crazy.
Someone else was crazy.
Even his therapist was crazy.
At the time, I accepted that story.
Today, I’d ask a different question.
If everyone around someone is supposedly the problem...
could the story itself be the problem?
Three years later, I finally sat down with Julie.
She left him a year prior to our conversation.
We talked for five hours.
There was no anger.
No competition.
Just two women trying to understand how they’d been living inside the same story from different sides.
At one point she quietly asked,
“Why didn’t you ask me?”
I’ve thought about that question ever since.
The answer wasn’t that I didn’t care.
It wasn’t that I didn’t want the truth.
I think I was afraid that if someone confirmed what my heart already knew...
I’d have to do something about it.
And that’s the part we don’t talk about enough.
Discernment usually isn’t the hard part.
Obedience is.
I’ve learned that peace is one of God’s greatest gifts.
When I have to constantly investigate...
Constantly wonder...
Constantly explain away what doesn’t make sense...
I’ve already started giving my peace away.
I’ve often told women,
You don’t want a life where you have to look over your shoulder.
If you’re constantly checking phones...
Questioning stories...
Wondering where someone really is...
Trying to convince yourself that everything is fine...
That isn’t peace.
And it isn’t the kind of love I believe God wants for any of us.
Today, when someone asks me,
“Should I stay?”
I don’t always tell them yes.
I don’t always tell them no.
But I do ask them to pay attention to something.
Not the excuses.
Not the promises.
Not the potential.
Not even the pretty flowers, extravagant dinners, sweet words and thoughtful gifts.
Their peace.
Because I’ve learned something after all these years.
God rarely shouts.
The God of the universe whispers.
And more often than not...
we hear Him the first time.
We just spend months trying to convince ourselves we didn’t.
So before you ask another friend...
Before you look for another sign...
Before you ask someone else what you should do...
Sit quietly for just a moment.
Imagine God sitting on the edge of your bed.
Then ask yourself one question.
If fear weren’t involved... what would I already know?
Start there.
Because looking back now, I eventually received all the truth and confirmation I thought I needed.
And it happened in God’s Time - definitely not mine.
But the truth is...
God had already given me enough.
