The Realities Behind the Gift ($ and All)

Thank you so much for the warm response to last week’s newsletter. Your messages remind me why I keep doing this.
Today, I want to talk about some realities that often get left out when people dream of becoming a Medium or a spiritual guide. Because this work isn’t just beautiful and healing—it’s also demanding and complex.
This Is NOT a 40-Hour Work Week Job
Many people think, “I’ll just do readings a few hours a week and make this my full-time career.”
If only it were that simple!
The truth is, this work is not like a regular job. It’s draining emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. It requires a deep commitment to self-care, boundaries, prayer, and reflection. You have to be able to hold space for pain and healing without losing yourself.
Pricing and Why It Matters
I often get asked, “Why do you charge for your work?” Sometimes people wonder if I should do it for free or just “donate” my gifts.
Here’s my honest take:
Our gifts were given to us by God, and yes, they are meant to help us financially as well. If you are a gifted teacher, or a carpenter, or a healer—would you work for free? Your talents are valuable and deserve respect.
That doesn’t mean you charge exorbitant fees. In my area, I set pricing that feels fair and accessible. I’ve seen others double or even quadruple those prices, and honestly, that feels out of reach for many who desperately need support. We want to serve our communities, but we also have to be realistic about how many clients we can help without burning out.
Sidenote: Where Your Money Goes Matters
When I first started doing this work professionally, I worked for two well-known psychic phone lines – Psychic Source and their sister company, Hollywood Psychics. At the time, clients were being charged around $7.99 per minute to speak with me. Out of that amount, I received just $.40 per minute. Yes, really.
What many don't realize is that on these kinds of sites, most of the money goes to the company – not the reader. So while you might be connecting with someone genuine and intuitive, the energy exchange isn't equal. The reader is often severely underpaid, underworked, and unable to give you their best because the system isn't built to honor the sacred nature of this work.
When I was offered the opportunity to work with Laurie at The Mystical Moon, everything changed. Laurie runs her business with professionalism, kindness, and care. Most importantly, she honors the readers. I was able to continue my growth, both spiritually and professionally.
During that time, I quietly built my own website. Laurie always supported me. I wasn't ready to go out fully on my own, but I was learning so much!
Fast-forward to now: I'm finally doing this full-time, independently. It's taken years of experience, learning, listening, (and true ministry positions weaved in!) and I'm deeply grateful!
Supporting an independent Medium and small business isn't just about money – it's about choosing connection over corporate structure, and care over convenience. Thank you for supporting the heart of this work! One honest connection at a time.
The Balance of Serving and Being Part of the Community
Am I supposed to volunteer or offer free services sometimes? Absolutely, yes—when you feel called and when it feels right.
Do I tell people about it? No. That’s between you and the people you help. Those moments are sacred, and sharing them publicly can cheapen the work or make it about me instead of them.
And truly, nothing feels better than helping someone in need, whether you’re paid or not.
But the main work, the steady foundation, has to be sustainable.
This Work Takes Time — and It Takes Heart
There’s so much to it: the emotions you carry, the energy you absorb, the ongoing growth you need.
It can be exhausting. It can be lonely. But it can also be the most rewarding work you’ll ever do.
After 12 years of walking this path, I can honestly say I’ve never been happier or felt more aligned with my (professional) purpose.
If You’re Just Starting Out…
• Be patient with yourself.
• Listen to God and your spirit first.
• Respect the seriousness of the Gift.
• Guard your energy.
• Don’t chase fame or fast success.
• Build your foundation slowly and with humility.
